Patients Take Action.

Preventable injuries, disabilities and deaths happen in Chicagoland every day. They can happen to you, a loved one, a friend. By becoming informed you can help protect yourself or someone you care for. By sharing your experience when something goes wrong – or almost goes wrong – you can help protect future patients. By joining Project Patient Care, you can help make this issue a priority and accelerate action to solutions.

The problem of poor quality care has not had the attention it needs in Chicagoland. This is a problem we can do something about when we focus. ICU patients in Michigan are less likely to incur infections than patients in Chicagoland. African-American women in New York City survive breast cancer much more often than in Chicago. More than a million reports of medical error or near misses have been made in Pennsylvania because lawmakers require it.

Together, we can do better. Project Patient Care is a non-profit organization. Every dollar of support helps build a comprehensive, collaborative, results-driven effort in our community. Your tax-deductible donation is an important way of underscoring your commitment to patient safety in Chicago. Every donation matters. Donate Now.

Why every Chicagoan should care?

We can be harmed. A preventable medical error can happen to you or to someone you love. Several public polls indicate that between 40 and 50% of consumers believe they themselves, a family member or a close friend has experienced medical error.

Together we can do better. Use of checklists very much like airplane pilots use before takeoff have been shown to reduce infection rates in Michigan and complications of surgery in hospitals across the world. Anesthesia is safer today because of widespread adoption of better technology and teamwork.

New solutions and better practice guidelines are tools at our fingertips. And new ones are continuously being developed. Working collectively, we can speed the rate at which they are embraced and integrated into the process of care.

New state and federal laws dramatically improve the way we can share what we learn from mistakes. These new strategies can be used much more effectively by both consumers and providers as we move forward.
